FAQ
What's the duration of the academic year?
Most group courses begin on the Monday closest to September 15th and end on May 31st. Certificate classes B2/C1/C2 begin at the beginning of September while pre-junior classes (Baby Sharks, High Five) start at the beginning of October. One on one lessons are flexible and can begin and end according to the student's needs.
How often are meetings with teachers held?
Parents/Teachers meetings are held 4 times a year. A first introduction takes place in October and then meetings are combined with end of term progress reports in December, March and June. However, parents can communicate with teachers to share any concerns or thoughts or to ask about the students' progress.
Do you offer discounts in fees?
There is a discount for siblings and multiple courses, for children of fellow educators, for large families with more than 3 children, for university students and in other special cases.
How often do students receive a progress report?
This takes place three times a year, in December, March and June.
Do all students have to take midterm and final exams?
Yes. Beginning from Junior A and up to E class (B1+) but also in French and German courses, students sit the in-house exams. These exams are an opportunity for revision and they provide a useful reflection of students' progress, including their strengths and potential weaknesses.
How do students prepare for the midterm and final exams?
The week before these exams is dedicated to revision lessons. These include an extra revision class, held on a separate day, to help students spot their possible problem areas and to support them in their revision.
Do you have any celebrations at the school?
At our school we celebrate Halloween, with costumes, games, pumpkin carving competitions, story-telling etc. For Christmas, our students put on a grand musical at the local community theatre. From pre-junior classes to B class, students look forward to this and prepare and rehears with enthusiasm every fall. We also celebrate the Carnival, Mother's Day and the Francophone Day. A German evening is also organized annually.
What happens if a student is absent from the lesson?
In this case, the student can attend the class online, only if the school administration has been informed by 3pm. This is a valuable tool, however we request that parents don't overuse this option because attending the lesson face to face is much more impactful, especially for young learners.
Can a student 'skip' a level?
No levels can be skipped, but they can be completed as an intensive course in the summer months. This is possible for some but not all levels. For instance, students can complete the syllabus of Junior B, B class, E class and Proficiency in the summer. Moreover, students who complete C class with excellent marks can join a class we call D+ where B1 and B1+ are covered simultaneously. Finally, with a GRADE A in FCE the student receives a C1 certificate allowing them to go straight to C2 Proficiency!
When do you recommend starting English courses? What about a second foreign language?
School readiness is an issue that should be addressed individually, as each child has a different degree of readiness and maturity, while for young learners, even a few months can make a big difference. If a child has started in Greek school without problems, then the second or third grade is a great time to begin learning English. Learning a second foreign language can start in grade 4 or 5. For first graders we recommend our Baby Sharks programme which introduces the language without emphasis on writing and spelling.
How can you ensure that all students in a group are of the same level?
Our current students sit final exams which confirm that they can graduate to the next level. New students need to write a placement test upon registration which shows their level so that they can enroll in the correct class. In this way we ensure that all students in a class have similar abilities and language skills. This is crucial for the efficiency of the lessons.
