WHO WE ARE
71 YEARS OF HISTORY
G.Stamatopoulou language school was established in 1953 by Sophia Stamatopoulou, a woman well ahead of her time. A Physical Education teacher with excellent knowledge of English and German, remembered by the local people of Paleo Faliro both for her vision and innovative methods of foreign language education, as well as her community and charity work. In 1968 her daughter Bookie Stamatopoulou graduated from with a degree from the English Department of the University of Athens and started teaching at the school. Her passion for teaching as well as her patience earned her the title of “most-loved teacher”. After graduating from Sussex University in the UK in 2001, Mrs. Bookie’s daughter Jeannie returned to Athens, bringing with her new innovative ideas and knowledge, and gradually took on the management of the school. Her goal is the implementation of up to date educational methods in language learning and acquisition, a vision supported by her colleagues.
Letter from our principal
So, how is it that a family-owned, neighborhood-based language school manages to survive and thrive for seven decades and beyond?
It is both a huge honor and a great responsibility for me to carry on and add on my grandmother’s and mother’s vision and strive every day to reach and surpass the high educational standards that they set before me as the foundations of this school. High standards, first and foremost, for our staff. In the 50s and 60s it was very difficult to find accomplished teachers of foreign languages and that was possibly the greatest challenge. Recently, due to the effect of brain drain, the difficulty lies in finding teachers that really love teaching and not people who find themselves in education as a last resort. That’s why I feel very fortunate working today and for many years, with passionate teachers who love what they do and who, besides having top language skills, share my vision of educating beyond testing, of the significance of students developing skills in a safe and supportive environment with a view of eventually joining and thriving in a multicultural world. A good educator generously shares their knowledge and energy and I am proud to say all my colleagues here at our school do that with genuine drive and purpose. brain drain, the difficulty lies in finding teachers that really love teaching and not people who find themselves in education as a last resort. The educator is but a bow who imparts knowledge, expertise and experience and the student is the arrow, ready to surpass us teachers, break new ground and fill us with pride.

Our methodology
21st Century Skills
In this day and age learning a language is not enough without developing skills that learners will use and hone throughout their lives. Our school and classrooms are safe places that encourage the development of skills like communication, cooperation and how to be useful members of the community.
Communication
Languages are nothing if not a means of communication and long gone are the days when students acquired certificates with barely any speaking skills. The classroom is a safe space to develop strong speaking and communication skills. Through group work, projects, debates and presentations, students develop fluency and communicate with their peers respectfully and confidently.
Critical Thinking
In this digital age children are bombarded from a very young age with information and stimuli and it's essential that they develop strong critical thinking that will enable them to understand, assess and classify this information and slowly form opinions of their own that they can express and support.
Creativity
People often say schools kill children's creativity and we want to make a difference. We encourage our students to cultivate their imagination and creativity through activities like role playing and story telling, allowing them to be bold and express their talents. In the age of AI it's these skills that will be most valued and sought after.
Collaboration
In the modern workplace individual work is all but eclipsed. That's why students must from a young age learn to work together respectfully and efficiently. Good listening skills and managing differences and disagreements are essential and classrooms are ideal, safe spaces to encourage this.
Citizenship
In the digital age, technology has eliminated distances but that also means that frequently problems are also globalized. There are issues like climate change that affect everyone and require collaboration and awareness from all of us. It's imperative that children realise the undisputed value of diversity but at the same time how humanity is united by universal needs and values. In this way they can, with empathy, become part of the solution and not the problem. These students will be tomorrow's global citizens.
Growth mindset
"I believe in my mind's power to learn and grow without saying I'm good or bad at XYZ. If I can't do something, I can't do it yet . I look at the success of others in order to find ways to improve and not with jealousy."
Resilience
I face difficulties with persistence and confidence. Often times reward in life is not instant, but I don't give up. With the help of my teachers and peers I keep trying in the belief that good moments lie ahead when effort is consistent.'
Mindfulness
I am present in every moment. I see myself and those around me with empathy and without judgement. I try to stop negative thoughts and limit distractions. By isolating outside noise I focus on the task at hand and I respond with efficiency to what is required.'
